Bicyclists: Try Maryville-Alcoa Greenway

Dear Bicyclists,

If you’re coming to East Tennessee, stop to ride the Maryville-Alcoa Greenway. You will be glad you did.

Great Smoky Mountain National Park is an attractive spot but it is not the best place to bicycle. I love the Park and its hiking trails, but even the Park Rangers will tell you it’s not ideal for cycling.

You could also try the Townsend Trail System, which is right at the edge of GSMNP. Like the Maryville-Alcoa Greenway, it’s nine-miles long. I like both systems, because they both have dedicated trails that skirt rivers, creeks and parks.

There are also plans to connect the two trail systems. No guarantee it will happen, but the cities are taking it seriously enough to hold public meetings with planners.

I love Maryville and Alcoa and Townsend. If you hook them together with a bike trail, I will probably never leave.

Happy trails,

Darren
